A bank robber who pleaded guilty in federal court in Abingdon
earlier this month spent almost 20 years living under an assumed
identity, U.S. Attorney John Brownlee announced this week.
Samuel Jacob Webb, 45, a former resident of Kingsport, Tenn.,
robbed the Dominion Bank on Abingdon's Main Street in September
1989.
Exploding tear gas and dye packs that bank workers put in a bag
with the money apparently detonated as Webb drove away, an
investigating officer's report said. Webb's stained car and clothing
were found, along with red-dyed money, but Webb himself disappeared.
