"Dark Matter" is a Chinese film, set in the Western United
States, with a Chinese lead and American co-stars Meryl Streep and
Aidan Quinn. If this is the future of globalism in filmmaking, it's
not so bad.
It's a beautifully shot, meditative tale of cultural dislocation
and the often-futile struggle to bridge the vast gulf between
American and Chinese cultures -- particularly China a decade ago,
when this based-on-a-true-story is set.
Liu Xing (Ye Lui) is a genius. He's an expert in "The Reiser
Model," which attempts to mathematically explain the origins and
dimensions of the universe. He is accepted into grad school to study
with professor Reiser (Quinn), leaving his factory-worker ...
