Article: Urgent need for more bone marrow donors to give the gift of life

PAUL Falco was 30 when he signed up to be a bone marrow donor. He had given blood since he was 18, and on one occasion picked up an information leaflet about bone marrow donation, which is needed by people with serious blood disorders such as leukaemia.

A small amount of blood was sent away for screening, and a letter came back saying he had been accepted on to the bone marrow donor register by the Anthony Nolan Trust.

Paul, a businessman who is married with two young children, was actually called upon to go through the procedure in spring last year.

The charity informed him that he had been matched to a male patient for whom all other treatments had failed.
