County progress on new courthouse in Multnomah County: slow but steady

For decades, lawyers, judges and assorted Multnomah County officials have voiced complaints about the cramped quarters within their nearly 100-year-old courthouse, hoping the county would invest in a modern building.

There's not enough space, they've said.

And there's only one entrance.

Worst yet, lawyers, jurors and the accused are often forced to co- mingle in small, open corridors.

When the Portland Development Commission in March released $9 million in taxable bonds for the realignment of the Hawthorne Bridge, which would make room for a proposed new courthouse near the Willamette River, those who'd voiced concerns about the courthouse started seeing a turning point.
