MOSCOW, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Russia witnessed 561 premeditated terrorist attacks in 2003, 55.8 percent up on the previous year, Russia's Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

Yury Demidov, first deputy chief of the ministry's organized crime department, told a news conference that terrorism remains a major threat to the country.

Demidov said over 400 terrorist attacks were perpetrated in southern Russia, including 386 in the breakaway republic of Chechnya.
