"Pure water" blamed for increase in typhoid cases in southern Nigeria

LAGOS, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- "Pure water," a daily-use drinking water for common people in Nigeria, has been blamed for the recent increase in cases of typhoid fever in southern Nigeria, a health official said Saturday.

Speaking at a workshop in Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom state, south Nigeria, State Health Commissioner Edet Attih said, "These untreated packaged water constitutes a great threat to the health of our people as they are prone to contamination by chemicals and industrial pollutants."
