Some 300 Chinese die from food poisoning in 2003, health ministry says

BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's Health Ministry said here Thursday that food poisoning killed 323 people on the Chinese mainland last year, 134.1 percent more than were reported in 2002, and also sickened 12,876 people.

The reported case number also rose 196.1 percent to 379 in 2003, according to a report released by the Health Ministry Thursday.

The ministry attributed the sharp increase to improved surveillance and reporting systems as well as enhanced public and press supervision. "Those who attempted to cover or delay reporting were warned and penalized by the ministry," it said.
