THE USELESSNESS of the Tories was concealed in the mid-Lent
fatigue that had settled gently over the Palace of Westminster. We
were struggling against banalities so vacuous that they sucked out of
you the very will to live.
Here is a summary of the government strategy behind the police pay
negotiations: "The object is to get money to people where it's
appropriate." They'll say anything. Literally anything.
How about the contempt young people feel for the police? John
Denham told us: "We have drawn together a task force, working with
the Department of Education and Skills, working together to build
respect for the police." It's unbearable, actually. You weren't
there. It was unbearable.
