Najib appointed Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian Defense Minister Najib Tun Razak is appointed as Deputy Prime Minister, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced on Wednesday.

"I handed over the appointment letter to Najib yesterday and went with him to the Istana Negara (State Palace) this morning for an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Paramount Ruler)," Abdullah told the packed media conference in Putrajaya after the Cabinet meeting.

The announcement ended months of speculation after Abdullah became Prime Minister following the retirement of his predecessor Mahathir Mohamad on Oct. 31, 2003.
