New case of mad cow disease found in Portugal's Azores

LISBON, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- The president of the Azores Agricultural Federation (FAA) Jorge Rita admitted on Tuesday that a new case of mad cow disease had been found in Punta Delgada, the capital of Portugal's mid-Atlantic Azores islands.

The first report of a locally-born animal infected with the mad cow disease this year was issued on Jan. 21 and the regional government's confirmation was released on Monday.

Rita said that since it is a 13-year-old Holstein-Frisian born from a cow imported from Germany, it might have inherited the disease from the mother.
