Australian troops to stay in Iraq until situation is safe: DM

CANBERRA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Australian Defense Minister Robert Hill said on Sunday that Australian troops are playing the role of protecting Australian diplomats in Iraq and will stay there until the place is safe enough.

"I look at the role that our forces are playing in providing security to our diplomats," Hill told the Nine Network TV.

"That task will be necessary until the place is safe enough for there to be civilian security officers," he said, adding that "I fear that that's quite a way off."
