Rwandan government starts talks on genocide compensation

KIGALI, April 12 (Xinhua) -- The Rwandan government is carrying out consultative meetings on how to compensate the 1994 genocide survivors, Justice Minister Edda Mukabagwiza said here Monday.

"Consultations on how to go about this issue are underway countrywide, and we hope that many Rwandans will take part," she said at a press conference .

Survivors have asked the government to give them reparations, saying most of them are passing through a terrible situation that deserves immediate actions.

"It is not an issue for the government only. We are exploring various avenues by which to do it," she said.
