Nigerian businessman sentenced to imprisonment for selling beer

LAGOS, May 9 (Xinhua) -- A magistrate's court in northern Nigeria's Muslim-dominated Zamfara state has sentenced a businessman to six years in prison for smuggling more than 100 cartons of beer under the provisions of Islamic Sharia law.

The man, identified only as Fred, was also given an option to pay a fine of 400,000 naira (about 2,857 US dollars), the News Agency of Nigeria reported Sunday.

The beer was said to have been intercepted by members of the Hisba Commission (Sharia enforcers) from a supermarket owned by the convict in Gusau, the Zamfara capital.
