Strong typhoon travels through western Japan, disrupting traffic

TOKYO, June 21 (Xinhua) -- A powerful typhoon traveled through western Japan on Monday, disrupting air, land and sea travel in Kyushu, Shikoku and the western part of Honshu.

Extremely strong winds prevailed around the center and the southeastern side of the season's sixth typhoon, bringing the danger of high waves, heavy rain and high tides, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Typhoon Dianmu landed at Kochi Prefecture, on Shikoku at around 9:30 a.m. (0030 GMT) and moved north-northeast. It passed through Japan's largest main island into the Sea of Japan in the afternoon.
