Russia to increase military presence around Chechnya: Putin

MOSCOW, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that Russia will step up military presence in the volatile North Caucasus region neighboring the breakaway republic of Chechnya.

"We will step up our efforts in the North Caucasus and do whatever is necessary, including building up our military presence, " Interfax news agency quoted Putin, who is on a working trip to Kamchatka peninsula in Russia's Far East, as saying.

Putin's remarks came two days after more than 200 heavily armed guerrillas, believed to be Chechen rebels, staged simultaneous attacks on police and government points in Russia's Ingushetia ...
