UN chief welcomes new timetable for presidential, parliamentary
elections in Afghanistan
UNITED NATIONS, July 9 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan
on Friday welcomed the decision made by Afghan's electoral
authorities to hold presidential elections on Oct. 9 and delay
national and local parliamentary elections until April 2005.
"The Secretary-General is convinced that the ongoing electoral
process, supported as it is by the keen aspiration of Afghans to
political participation, can be brought to a successful conclusion
and make an essential contribution to the restoration of a lasting
peace and the building of a legitimate democratic state in
