TThis month it is the Atkins diet and the Glycaemic Index diet
(aka the Jennifer Aniston diet and the Kylie Minogue diet). Five
years ago it was the Kensington diet. Before that it was the Cabbage
Soup diet. In the wake of our never-ending quest to lose that last
10lbs, a dieting industry has been created in this country with an
estimated annual value of more than pounds 1bn.
Every year, hundreds of new "breakthrough" diet books and regimes
are launched. Every year we put ourselves on one or other of these
diets. Every year we put back on the pounds we have lost. One in four
