3rd Ld-Writethru: Malaysia Federal Court sets Anwar Ibrahim free

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia Federal Court, in a surprise decision, Thursday set former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim free after quashing his sodomy conviction.

In a 2-1 majority verdict, a three-member panel comprising judges of the highest court Abdul Hamid Mohamad and Paduka Rahmah Hussain and Court of Appeal judge Baharuddin Shah Tengku Mahmud approved the appeal by Anwar against his conviction and sentence for sodomy.

The court also approved the appeal against conviction and sentence by Anwar's adopted brother Sukma Darmawan Sasmitaat Madja.
