EU decries spate of violence in Nigeria's oil rich Niger Delta

LAGOS, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Concerned over the violence in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta region and its disruption to oil operations, the European Union (EU) has urged the Nigerian government to demilitarize local militias in a bid to ensure lasting peace there.

"It is wrong for anyone to believe that violence will ensure lasting solution to the problem of the Niger Delta region," Leonidas Tezapsidas, head of an EU delegation to Nigeria, told reporters Wednesday in Lagos, the largest city in Africa's top oil producer.
