Nigeria ranks world's third with people living with HIV/AIDS

LAGOS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria ranks third in the world with the number of people living with HIV/AIDS after South Africa and India, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported Thursday.

Umar Pate, head of Department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, was quoted as calling for a collective war against the scourge.

According to him, the first case of HIV/AIDS which was reported in the West African country in 1986 had continued to spread with all the attendant consequences increasing from 1.8 percent in 1999 to 5.8 percent in 2001. There are currently about 6-7 million ...
