Marco Antonio Quintanilla was looking forward to June 7, when his
son Joseph would run in the Vision 5K race for the visually
impaired. In previous races, Mr. Quintanilla had served as his son's
guide, informing him of obstacles and water stops and timing him
during the race in Boston's Fenway area.
The father and son, who was born with congenital glaucoma and is
legally blind, had been running together for years. But it wasn't a
love of running that motivated Mr. Quintanilla; his passion was
soccer. It was his love for his son that drove Mr. Quintanilla to
accompany Joseph in workouts along the Charles River or Fresh Pond,
running with him as a guide in his heavy work boots, sometimes ...
