To West Sider Harold Kempf, the recipe for success in the
restaurant business was as simple as the recipe for the breakfast
treats he was hoping to sell.
Harold's oldest son, Chris, can recite his father's guiding
principles by rote.
"Make a really good doughnut, have a really clean bakery, and
have some fine, friendly people serving," Chris said on a recent
morning at the Kempf's Donut Bank Bakery & Coffee Shop on St. Joseph
Avenue, the third location Harold opened after founding the local
chain of eateries in 1967 with the first store, located on First
Avenue.
