South West MEP Giles Chichester last night quit as Conservative
party leader in Brussels after admitting breaking expenses rules
with payments of more than pounds400,000 made to a firm he helped
run.
Hours after Tory HQ demanded to see the detailed accounts of the
Westcountry politician, Mr Chichester announced he was standing down
as leader of the Euro-group to "clear his name".
The episode was especially embarrassing for leader David Cameron
who just three months ago appointed Mr Chichester to clean up the
party's MEPs' allowances in the wake of a scandal at Westminster
over MP Derek Conway.
Last night Mr Cameron said he was right to have thrown in the
