ECB president hints at possible rate hike in July
BERLIN, June 5 (Xinhua) -- European Central Bank (ECB) President
Jean-Claude Trichet hinted at the possibility of a rate hike next
month after the ECB decided to leave its benchmark lending rate
unchanged at a six-year high of 4 percent on Thursday.
The clearest signal so far for a rate hike was sent by Trichet at
the press conference after the ECB governing council meeting in
Frankfurt.
"It is not excluded that after having carefully examined the
situation we could decide to move our rates for a small amount in
our next meeting in order to secure the solid anchoring of inflation
expectations," he said.
