There have been many tales of satellite numpties, who blind-ly
follow directions down railway tracks, up gated roads, into rivers
and even get themselves wedged in narrow alleys.
More seriously, rural communities like Wedmore in Somerset have
found their homes and businesses plagued by lorries seeking a
direct route to Weston- super-Mare or Burnham, because the routing
algorithms which drive the systems are not yet sophisticated enough
to recognise that different vehicles require different routes.
So are these systems a blessing, or a menace?
Critics of sat-nav argue that the simple presence of the gadget
in the car can be too much of a distraction for the motorist.
