Today, that figure is around 500. That's more than a different
cheese for each day of the year. Not even Wallace of Wallace and
Gromit fame - who if you don't know, has a fascination with cheese -
can match that.
France, a Catholic country, believes in another Trinity - that of
bread, cheese and wine. Indeed many cheeses were produced in
monasteries, along with the bread and wine, to reinforce the whole
Trinity thing.
My earliest recollections of French cheese were from family
holidays when strange little packets would be placed in the back of
