Elkhart Lake -- Ben Spies would not be denied at Road America
this time.
Two years ago the American Motorcyclist Association two-time
defending champion came here with a chance to win for a circuit-
record seventh straight time but fell into a game of catch-up with
six-time series champion Mat Mladin, who beat the rookie by less
than two-tenths of a second.
On Saturday Spies came back to the 4-mile course with six
straight victories, only this time the 23-year-old was the class of
the field. He led from start to finish, beating Mladin by 8.768
seconds and the rest of the field by more than 19 seconds on the
first day of the Suzuki Superbike Doubleheader.
