These are two ideals that 100-year-old Catherine E. Zerbe Kring has lived by and she figures they must be the secret to her longevity.

Born June 5, 1908, in Bowmansville, Mrs. Kring is the daughter of the late Theodore F. and Mary S. Wise Zerbe. She spent many years working on the family farm with her seven siblings. Six of the siblings have since passed away.

Pop would put me on the hay wagon. I had to tromp down the hay, Mrs. Kring said.

Dad was a butcher. We had to help cook the Pannhaas (scrapple). That was good still for breakfast in the morning. We had toast with that. We had eggs, Mrs. Kring recalled.
