Quake orphans estimated under 2,000, says official

BEIJING, June 7 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Civil Affairs has said that children orphaned by the Sichuan massive earthquake would be under 2,000, although local governments have not yet verified identity of all unclaimed children.

Zhang Shifeng of the ministry said Friday that there are more than 1,000 such children, including those who lost their parents during the earthquake, whose identities have not yet been verified, and orphans who have already been claimed by their surviving relatives.
