Lancaster is no Honolulu, but it's not Lexington, Ky., either.
In fact, Lancaster did quite well in a recent Brookings
Institution study ranking the carbon emissions from the 100
metropolitan areas nationwide.
Lancaster ranked 23rd, well behind Honolulu, where the mild
climate and short commutes led to the least carbon-based pollution
per resident of the areas studied. Lexington, with an estimated 3.45
metric tons of carbon emitted per resident in 2005, scored worst.
Lancaster's overall ranking was the best of the six Pennsylvania
metropolitan areas included. Harrisburg, the next closest area,
scored near the bottom at 92nd.
