Post Office boss Alan Cook has warned councils will find it costly to keep open branches earmarked for the axe.

He defended the closure programme, and forecast the network would not fall below 11,500 provided the post office card account was retained.

Mr Cook, managing director of Post Office Ltd, was giving evidence to the Commons business and enterprise committee, which is investigating the network.

The Government has demanded 2,500 branches close across the country, including about 200 in the West, under the costcutting Network Change programme.
