What is garage rock?
According to Steven Van Zandt, host of "Little Steven's
Underground Garage Show," it's what he says it is. It's the Ramones
and Dick Dale, it's vintage Beatles and Rolling Stones, it's the
Chesterfield Kings and the Woggles (bands on his label Wicked Cool
Records). It's especially the late Bo Diddley.
It can even be, as it was on a recent show, the music of Nancy
Sinatra and Dean Martin.
"We do a lot of celebration of pop culture," says Van Zandt with
garrulous laughter, noting that new affiliates -- such as WDVE-FM in
Pittsburgh, where the program premiered earlier this month -- might
