A FUNNY THING happened on the way to the top of the US bestseller
lists. In the immediate aftermath of 11 September, a book that
eventually made it to pole position was almost pulped due to its
"controversial nature" and "the change in the country's political
climate". The publishers got cold feet about the possible response of
the US public to a book that was not only hilariously and
encyclopedically critical of George Bush and his posse, but also
prepared to make the case that a US presidential election was stolen
in a right-wing coup - and that no one with any power or influence
appeared to give a damn.
