The ring of the phone rattled my brain and forced me deeper under
the cosy bedcovers. It was 1am on a cold Saturday in March. My wife
answered the call, and was soon shaking me and saying the words I
least wanted to hear: "It's for you".
A woman's voice said: "It's Mountain Rescue control here. Are you
free to come on a search now?"
"Erm, yes. Yes! Of course!" I said. She told me the grid reference
and I hung up. I lay still, listening to the rain whipping the
windows. My bed was so warm.
Earlier in the evening the police had received a call because two
walkers had gone missing. After initial investigations they realised
that this was not a job for them but for Mountain Rescue. Pagers, or ...
