The BBC's remit as a public service broadcaster is based on
impartiality, its comprehensiveness of coverage at both a local and
national level, and its role in those respects in helping to inform
democracy.
Yet on all counts it is found wanting.
The public understand this, which is why so many people question
the legitimacy of the licence fee - even as they recognise that the
Beeb is often used as a football by rival political parties.
Now the impression is confirmed by a BBC Trust report into the
broadcaster's news and current affairs coverage, which found it was
"falling short of its own high standards".
