Green Bay -- Away from the team and certainly away from
onlookers, there is a quiet punters duel developing in Green Bay.
For the last two months, third-year Green Bay Packers punter Jon
Ryan and rookie free agent Ken DeBauche have been working
exclusively with long snappers Thomas Gafford and J.J. Jansen in
front of special teams coaches Mike Stock and Shawn Slocum. Punting
before practice, or after workouts on Ray Nitschke practice field,
Ryan seems to enjoy little security in the fact that he has 153
punts in experience over the free agent from Wisconsin.
So like everywhere else -- except maybe kicker Mason Crosby --
there is competition at punter.
