Margaret Brown, development manager at Gloucester Cathedral,
explains how stonemasons have been at the very heart of the
Cathedral for hundreds of years.
Masons have been the lifeblood of this and other cathedrals for
almost 1,000 years and 11th century masons' marks can be seen on
Gloucester Cathedral's huge Norman nave pillars. Over the centuries,
masons have been responsible for creation of the unique cloisters
and other architectural elements of the Cathedral. Over recent years
Cathedral masons have worked on virtually every part of the building
from the crypt to the tower and have been responsible for carving
new pinnacles, gargoyles, portrait heads and other decorative
