He veteran Labour MP Tony Benn summed it up thus: "I never
thought I would be in the House of Commons on the day that Magna
Carta was repealed." The shadow home secretary, David Davis, was
equally outraged about the vote to detain terrorism suspects without
charge for 42 days.
So much so (apparently) that he resigned his seat as MP for
Haltemprice and Howden to force a by-election on the single issue of
the relentless erosion of civil liberties under this NuLab
Government.
So what's the barney about - and is this matter of such gravitas
that it could spell the death of democracy as we and our ancestors
have known it?
