On a recent morning, Steve DeSilvio was standing on scaffolding at the Pitchfork Records building, grinding out loose mortar, replacing broken bricks and adding new mortar. DeSilvio, who owns Sherwood Masonry, said he planned to fix up the side of the building, then refurbish the front.

He sounded hopeful that the masonry could be done in three weeks and that the work to be done by other contractors - replacing windows, adding metal to the storefront and installing a new sign - could be complete this summer. But days later, DeSilvio was gone.
