The distinctive grey tower block will be covered in new cladding and all the external windows will be replaced.

Builders are expected to move on to the Anlaby Road site by next March, with the scheme expected to cost between pounds5m and pounds7m and take up to two years to complete.

Since February 2006, the 14-storey tower - built in 1961 - has been enclosed in a safety net to protect the public from falling masonry.

Today, David Haire, director of business development and strategy for Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, admitted the hospital does not look as good as it could.
