HAMPDEN - The Pine Tree Landfill must stop accepting waste by the
end of December 2009, but if trash continues to cross through the
facility's gates at the current rate, it could close several months
earlier.
While Don Meagher, manager of planning and development for
Casella Waste Systems Inc., said the company would have an estimated
closure date determined by September, Hampden Town Manager Susan
Lessard said that based on her rough calculations of fill rate, the
landfill could close between June and September 2009.
"We are pretty confident we will not go all the way to December
'09," Meagher said. "We could fill it at whatever rate we decide.
