Article: Sailing: Boats brave heat for Irey Memorial

Thirty boats in five fleets braved stifling temperatures and a heat advisory last weekend to compete in the annual Dave Irey Memorial Regatta, held out of West River Sailing Club in Galesville.

Despite the oppressive heat, a healthy breeze filled in from the southeast on Saturday afternoon and allowed organizers to get off three races. There was an hour postponement on Sunday before a light and shifty westerly propelled two more races.

Tracy Oliver, a dentist from northern Virginia, displayed outstanding light air speed in winning five of six starts in the A- Cat catamaran class. Oliver was second in the other race in beating West River Sailing Club commodore Chris Ford by five points.
