The Government has revealed that 2.5 million of the country's
11.5 million pensioners (22 per cent, more than one in every five)
are now living below the poverty line. That is 300,000 more than a
year ago. Across Devon this means that at least 34,500 pensioners
come into this category and the situation is getting worse.
I applaud David Davis's action. Since 1973, to use the words of
that great speaker, Lord Tonypandy, "we have been led by the nose"
into a steady erosion of our freedom and liberty. This erosion has
accelerated and continues to do so more than ever under New Labour.
Fuel poverty is when a household has to spend more than 10 per
cent of its income on gas and electricity. ...
