I pulled up to the drive-through at a local sub shop recently and
saw a sign taped to the menu: "Due to recommendations by the FDA, we
are not currently offering tomatoes in any of our sandwiches. We
apologize for the inconvenience."
I immediately knew what I was dealing with. It wouldn't be summer
without a food scare on the national level. Greatest hits from years
past have included tainted chicken pot pies, E. coli in the green
onions at Taco Bell and surprise cans of spinach. These scares pop
up, inspire a few jokes for late-night comedians, fill time on cable
news and quickly disappear.
Later that day, I heard the gory details in a radio report. The
