A stolen wine bottle smashed on the ground injuring the thief, Lincoln Magistrates' Court heard.

Mark Arden (39) had been detained by a store detective outside Marks and Spencer after leaving without paying for wine worth pounds4.49.

He dropped the bottle cutting his leg on the broken glass outside the High Street store.

Prosecutor Deborah Cartwright said: "In the process of being detained a scuffle broke out and the wine bottle smashed. It cut his foot."
