Article: City, county fight over golf course

When George Graefe bought a neglected golf course on the outskirts of Annapolis in 1989, he viewed it as a retirement investment.

Part of a family involved in Anne Arundel County golf since 1924, Mr. Graefe says he worked for 498 straight days to remove jungle- like growth overtaking fairways and greens at the course nestled in the Annapolis Roads community.

"Instead of an IRA, we bought a golf course," Mr. Graefe said last week.

As Mr. Graefe approached age 50 a few years ago, he thought about resuming his golf career on the PGA's senior tour.

With an offer or two for his Annapolis Golf Club on the table, it seemed like a sale was inevitable and he would be able to realize his retirement ...
