Article: Landfill loss dumps bill on city of Milwaukee

Milwaukee will pay roughly $500,000 more per year to dispose of dirt from its projects once the Hartung landfill closes and becomes a park.

The city has dumped clean fill and asphalt from public works jobs in the former quarry property for 30 years and avoided landfill costs the whole time. But those days will end in the next few years once the quarry's hole is finally full.

"You look at 50,000 cubic yards, and you are paying $10 a yard, it adds up," said Ghassan Korban, coordination manager for the city's Department of Public Works. "It's been definitely a valuable resource for us. It helps out."
