STRAWBERRIES are the perfect taste of summer - full of sunshine, sweetness and that tang for perfect flavour. Or are they?

Once upon a time the British strawberry season lasted little more than six weeks. British strawberries were small and sweet and designed to be eaten within hours of being picked.

Now different varieties and the use of polytunnels mean the British strawberry season lasts for months rather than weeks, and to fill in the gaps, we fly strawberries in from all over the world.

But do they taste the same? No. Absolutely not. Which means that there might be people out there who have never really tasted a strawberry that tastes as a strawberry should. Shame.
