Roundup: Chadian army in major victory against capital-bound
rebels
N'DJAMENA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The Chadian army has announced
that it has defeated rebel fighters during a decisive battle in the
town of Am Zoer, 80 km northeast of Abeche, the main town in the
east of the country, as it attempts to put down a new rebellion that
is threatening to go all the way to the capital N'Djamena.
The victory, which has been described as "decisive" by the
government side, has also been confirmed by independent sources
around the town, means that the rebels will have to halt their
offensive and possibly regroup ahead of another push towards the
capital, according to observers.
