Actually, McKinney's "West Virginia Civil War Almanac" is the first of three West Virginia-based research projects on the bloody North-South struggle that, among other things, produced West Virginia. The almanac should settle a host of family disputes about predecessors' allegiances and unit affiliations, since McKinney identifies nearly 14,000 West Virginia veterans, listing their names, regiments, periods of service, war injuries and remarks such as "shot at Gettysburg," or "contracted piles: still afflicted."
